Hannah Kum
Ph.D., MFA
Dr. Hannah Kum is a researcher, interaction designer, and media artist currently living in New York.
Born in Gangnam, Seoul, Hannah Kum studied art and design in London, Australia, and Korea.
Hannah Kum was an award-winning media artist in London early in her career. She was one of the young up-and-coming artists featured in the short film Three Women in the City. Hannah Kum crafted her art in various media, including sculptures of steel, silicon, stone, and other media, as well as video art, media art, installation art, performance art, and later digital art.
Dr. Kum’s creative and design work has received several awards. The work has been featured in over 25 solo and group art and design exhibitions spanning the globe: the U.S.A., England, Italy, Spain, Korea, Australia, and Japan.
Hannah Kum returned to Korea and received her Ph.D. in the World Class University program at Sungkyunkwan (SAMSUNG) University. SKKU is the oldest university in Korea (est. 1398), now owned and supported by the SAMSUNG Foundation.
Dr. Kum was a lead designer at Hewlett Packard’s (HP) only Global Design Center in Singapore. As a designer, she worked on interaction design projects for several companies including SAMSUNG, Google, KT, Amazon, 4U Networks, and other organizations.
In her role as a professor, Dr. Kum has been a researcher and professor at universities in California, the New York area, and Korea.
Dr. Kum’s research and designs have been supported by grants or external funding from the National Science Foundation, ATT Foundation, the National Research Foundation of Korea, Amazon, and several other funders. Dr. Kum's research publications include three books and articles published in several journals and conferences, such as ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE, EURO-VR, and others.
Hannah Kum sculpts, plays piano, and loves to explore the world for work and pleasure. For example, she has visited over 15 countries just in the last two years.
