Interactive AR Installation:
Artists Emerge from Their
Paintings
Artists Emerge from their Paintings is an augmented reality application. A museum visitor viewing a major painting can have a direct interactive experience with the artist, the world of the painting, and the artwork's context. Users wearing a head-mounted display suddenly experience a whole 3D scene that appears to emerge from the painting. The scene and experiences are triggered when the hardware and application detect a Van Gogh painting hanging on the wall. Upon approaching the painting, the users encounter a life-size Van Gogh who stands directly beside the user and speaks about his art using the actual words of Van Gogh. The 3D scene around the user and the painting includes life-size reproductions of 3D assets modeled from Van Gogh’s real studio. So, the viewer can visit his studio with Van Gogh. All this is done via an A.R. experience on location at the Museum where Van Gogh's actual painting is displayed. (Kum-Biocca, 2020)
